Insa, programul de slabit Atkins sustine exact contrariul, adica pentru a slabi o persoana trebuie sa consume cantitati ridicate de grasimi si scazute de carbohidrati.Filosofia dietei Atkins Organismul uman este capabil sa arda atat grasimile cat si carbohidratii pentru a produce energia necesara functionarii adecvate. Carbohidratii, sub forma de glucoza, sunt prima sursa utilizata de organism pentru a produce energie. Dr. Atkins sugereaza ca prin reducerea semnificativa a cantitatii de carbohidrati consumati, organismul uman trece de la arderea carbohidratilor la arderea grasimilor pentru a produce energie. Acest proces este cunoscut sub denumirea de lipoliza, rezultatul secundar al acestui proces fiind cetoza. Cand grasimile sunt dizolvate pentru producerea de energie, prin respiratie si urina sunt eliberate cetone. Acesta este modul prin care se pierde in greutate prin intermediul Dietei Atkins. De asemenea, Dr. Atkins sustinea ca cetoza afecteaza productia de insulina, fapt care previne formarea unor cantitati ridicate de grasime in organism. Dupa ce organismul intra in cetoza, acesta incepe sa foloseasca grasimea pentru a produce energie, astfel, poftele pentru glucide vor disparea. Cu toate ca majoritatea persoanelor urmeaza aceasta dieta deoarece ajuta la scaderea rapida in greutate, oamenii ar trebuie sa stie ca acest plan alimentar ajuta la scaderea colesterolului, previna hipertensiunea, diabetul si chiar sindromul ovarului polichistic.
